After School Club

The after school club operates at the Twickenham premises and is open to pupils from the school as well as those from its local link schools which include The Mall Preparatory School, Archdeacon Cambridge's CE School, Trafalgar School and St James' RC Primary School. Children are collected from these schools at the end of their school day and escorted to our premises by Jack & Jill School Staff, from where they can be collected at any time up until 6.00pm. The club operates for the duration of each of the link schools' terms, usually commencing prior to the Jack and Jill school term and closing after its end.

Children between the ages of 2-11 attend the club and are divided into three groups according to age, each group having its base in a separate area on the ground floor of the building.  As far as is possible, and with assistance from staff as necessary, children take responsibility for planning activities for their own group, deciding its name and agreeing a basic set of rules by which to abide.

Each evening, children have the chance to relax and engage in self-directed play activities under the supervision of the school's team of experienced play workers, most of whom have been employed at the school for many of the years since the club first started in 1995. There are also daily, adult led activities in which children can join, as well as scheduled quiet times when those children who have homework to complete can do so without disruption. Frequent use is made of both the school hall and the outside space on Twickenham Green for games and exercise for the energetic as well as the school's creative resources for those who gain pleasure from artistic activities. A healthy tea is provided.

A Typical Afternoon in After School Club

Creative Time

A wide range of age-appropriate creative activities are always available: from simple drawing and painting to cooking, pottery, modelling, jewellery-making and collage. Great emphasis is placed on child-initiated activities and children have supervised access to our well stocked arts and crafts room, allowing them free choice of equipment and input into the day’s activity. Children are encouraged to join these activities but individual choice is respected at all times so that activities are open and non-compulsory.

Homework Time

Every afternoon except Friday, there is a scheduled 15 – 20 minute homework time after tea. The aim during this period is to provide children with a quiet environment in which they are able to concentrate on their homework with the support of our staff. All children with reading homework have the time to read to an adult, and those with other homework are able to focus in a calm setting conducive to work.

Sports

Our sports provision is tailored to suit the needs of a wide age-range. The youngest children are given the opportunity to exercise and engage in basic sports skills like throwing, catching and kicking, whist the older children generally enjoy the structure of organised games of football, kwik cricket or races. The self-directed theme remains central, and children often choose or invent their own games with the support of staff.
